FLATSTOCK 4 AND API

That's right. Our renegade group of poster designers has managed to pull off four consecutive poster conventions in less than two years. Poster artists from around the world will hit Austin Texas for Flatstock 4.

The FLATSTOCK poster show series is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing, bi-annual, series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today. You've heard the sordid tales of deluxe printmaking sold to the general public by the artists themselves, now come see for yourself. Your favorite bands put to paper by your favorite artists coming together for the freak out in one big ass room.

Flatstock 4 is is an all-ages event and free for all. No fancy passes needed, just show up ready to be overwhelmed with amazing posters (you might want to bring some dough too since you won't want to leave empty handed.) Plan to attend workshops in the morning and buying lots of swell stuff from the artists who made it.

The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organized in 2002. as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular web site gigposters.com. The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties. The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who've created it -they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.

WORKSHOPS AT FLATSTOCK 4

This year the API will be sponsoring workshops for those folks who want to see first hand the process involved in making hand made silk screened and stenciled posters. We are very fortunate to have some of the field's best craftsmen bringing their skills to Austin for everyone to learn from.

Silkscreen: Friday March 19th 10 AM to Noon San Francisco's Chuck Sperry and Ron Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Rock Art fame will be demonstrating how to hand silkscreen posters with a focus on metallic inks. Chuck and Ron have been creating some of the best poster work and most skilled printmaking of the last 8 years and have a ton of knowledge to share with the masses. They recently celebrated the release of their first retrospective book "Eyesore" published by Last Gasp in San Francisco.

Stencil: Saturday March 20th 10 AM to Noon. Austin's own Mig Kokinda will show us all how to create posters using hand cut stencils and spray paint. Mig has been tattooing , painting murals and making posters for over nine years. His posters are all hand cut, spray painted, and un-matched in detail and beauty. They truly are something to see so come let Mig show you how it's done. Mig recently completed an installation for the Austin Museum Of Art entitled "It's All In Your Perspective," designed by Mig and Austin artist Gabel Karsten. The hands-on gallery features a 4 x 8 foot Lite-Brite.
